Vanessa's musical past has been rich and diverse. At the age of 4 she began taking piano lessons and grew to complete grade 9 certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music. In Junior High Vanessa began playing the saxophone which sparked her interest in jazz and big band music. In 2000/21 Vanessa had the opportunity to play in the prestigous band Little Birds. This experience was the gateway to her pursuing music at a post-secondary level. Although Vanessa began her education in sciences she quickly changed directions and applied to music school. In 2004 Vanessa was accepted into a jazz and contemporary music program in Edmonton. In 2006 she obtained a Music Diploma in Performance from Grant MacEwan University. After graduating Vanessa found her love of entrepreneurship and launched Azure Music Studio Inc. located in Sherwood Park, AB. The studio offered music lessons on several instruments and grew to employ 13 music instructors for both private and group lessons. Her studio was best known for the year end productions where students played along side profession musicians in the main stage at Festival Place. Throughout this time as owner of Azure Music Studio, Vanessa also developed her skills as a drum facilitator, leading drumming circles in schools and for corporate events.
In 2014, as Vanessa started her family, she chose to sell Azure Music Studio but continued operating under the name Azure Drumming. Today Vanessa continues to facilitate drumming for homeschool families, wellness centres, corporations and in public schools.
As a homeschooling mom herself, Vanessa created Azure Ensembles in 2023 to allow homeschool youth the opportunity to learn music in a group setting, just like her fond memories of the school band room when she was young. Classes are run in Edmonton, Stony Plain/Spruce Grove and Sherwood Park. Sign up for a class today and become part of the Azure Music Family!
